In the past 21 years, Google has developed immensely. Google has started its journey From a garage in 1998 to a company with a revenue of 116 Billion US dollars in 2018. Google search engine went live in 1998. Google has evolved very much in their working algorithm, You will be able to witness many changes in google search. Larry Page and Sergey Brin came up with an idea of Page Rank in 1998 to attain good quality websites and to provide a high-quality search result to the user. Google Algorithm is a computer language, it is sets of command to perform the defined task. I have already published a blog about the history of Google, visit to know more. It's time to unfold the Google Updates until now.
Unfolding the Google updates
Google AdWords, Google Toolbar (2000)
1) Google offers an advertising platform where advertisers can pay and display their ads on every google partner's website and google search engine.it the most used advertising method by most of the business. Most of google's revenue is earned through Google Adwords.
2) Google Tool Bar is available in internet explorers, people don't need to visit google instead they need to open toolbar only to access the functions of Google. it was available in download form.
Google Adsense, Fritz, Florida, Boston (2003)
1) Google Adsense is money earning program, a website with good traffic can apply for the program if they approve you can provide a space to display google ads on your site by pasting a code at the back end of the web page. Google pays you for each click that got from your website.
2) Fritz aka Google Dance is an update related to Google indexing. a certain amount of index was updated every day instead of bulk update it became a huge relief to webmasters.
3) Florida is the first major core algorithm update done by Google, the main focus was against spammy (Black hat) practices like keyword stuffing, hidden text. It also acts as a filter every web page goes through Florida.
4) Boston is the first-named and officially updates algorithm by Google. It is a monthly core update later it was a failure and Google stopped this update
Brandy (2004)
Brandy was a preparation update for Austin update, no changes were made to the algorithm only indexing was changed.
No-follow, Bourbon, Personalized Search, XML Sitemaps, Jagger, Google Local/Maps, Big Daddy (2005).
1) No-follow: Google introduced it against comment spamming and to control the quality of the outbound link. (rel=nofollow) is the comment to call the function.
2) Bourbon: it acts as a filter on spam from google results. It detects duplicate content and punishes the website.
3) personalized search: It analyses the data on what's the user is searching and save it in Google my search history, using these data google provides a personalized search result to each individual.
4) XML sitemap: it is an XML file which acts as a map to the webpage, which helps Google to index and crawls the webpage.
5) Jagger: it is a number of series updates. webpage gets punished because of duplicate content, reciprocal link, link farming, and link buying.
6) Google Maps: Google merges Local search and Mapping Experience together. Users can access the local information and helps to navigate easily.
7) Big Daddy: It is more like an infrastructure update, this made a great impact in SERP. Two new data centers were also introduced with IP addresses: 66.249.93.104 and 64.233.179.104.
Universal search (2007)
Universal search introduced a new listing method which includes images, videos, and news from the webpage. This update started to promote vertical search results and the user interface.
Google Suggest (2008)
Google Suggest is an update where when you start to type something in Google search then related suggestions also will be displayed below search.they also made some changes in their logo.
Real-Time search (2009)
Real-time search: Google started to use social media, Google News, Google Blog Search, new webpages to give real-time search results.
Social signals, Negative review, Caffeine, Mayday (2010)
1) social signals: the websites which use social media very well were ranked well. Later Google has made some changes to it the preference was given to Social media authority value
The pages which get influential interaction get ranked better.
2) negative review: Websites with Good review started to rank better, it helps people to believe in the search result
3) caffeine: it's an infrastructural update. Google started a data center this made google search results 50% fresher than the past result.
4) mayday: this is a ranking algorithm update that affected the long-tail keyword. It gave more preference to a webpage with more content for long keyword search results.
Panda, schema.org, freshness (2011)
1) Panda update was mainly against content spamming. Because of this update search result quality get better. Panda 4.0 Algorithm act as a filter after crawling the web pages it gets filtered
through Panda qualified pages to pass through and spam pages get rejected at the initial stage itself this made search quality improve. Algorithm Panda was updated to Panda 4.0 in 2014.
Panda mainly focused on content duplication, content spinning, grammatical error, thin page, keyword stuffing.
2) schema.org: This move was to provide rich and high-quality content to users. schema.org establishes a foundation that helps webmasters with a pack of the micro schema. micro schema is structured data that defines the content on-page.
3) freshness: using data collected through caffeine google provide you fresh information. recent information was given in search result and it has affected up to 35% of queries
parked domain, penguin, pirate, Exact match domain (2012)
1) parked domain: This update was done due to the complaints from webmasters that domain ranking is getting distracted, google mistakenly displays parked domain and mistreated published domain as a parked domain.
2) penguin: Google came up against link spamming with this update. At the initial stage, it affected 3.21% of English queries. Many updates were done on the penguin, penguin 4.0 was made in real-time and it takes action immediately.
Link spamming - building a non-ethical backlink. link selling, link buying, link exchange, low-quality directory submission comes under link spamming.
comment spamming - Its a method of posting a link in the comment section under blogs and articles and converting the traffic.
Link farming - is cultivating the link through non-ethical process eg: backlink generator.
wiki spamming - submitting content in Wikipedia has become most used practice within webmasters
Guest blogging - is a practice of blogging in another person's blog to build backlink and traffic.
3) pirate: Google punishes websites with copyright violations. they can file a complaint by DMCA rule
4) Exact match domain: buying the exact domain name on which the service is provided will help to rank better
Hummingbird, payday loan (2013)
1) Hummingbird: it is mainly focused on semantic results. it provides deep information about the keyword which the user has searched. sematic is a study of words and logic. This update made google more interactive. Google has introduced AI in a small amount
2) payday loan: This was against spammy queries like "payday loan" and other spam queries. webpages with cheating, misleading content will be getting punished.
Pigeon, https/SSL (2014)
1) pigeon: Pegion update is an algorithm that is related to local SEO. It helps to provide the result based on location.
Things to do local SEO
1.Register at google my business
2.if you are maintaining a page to get listed in a particular location then you must add google my business address to it.
3.submit the domain in the local directory
4. embed the map location in about us or contact us page
5. The social media profile should get interaction from the local area.
2) Https/SSL: Google started to consider security as a major priority because by the time many e-commerce websites were started to do business. websites with https/SSL was likely ranked in a better position.
Rankbrain,mobilegeddon (2015)
1) Rank brain: Rank brain strongly used AI for providing the best quality result to the users. The rank brain helps to give the result according to the situation this has made a great impact between people.
2) mobilegeddon: this update gave more preference to mobile-friendly webpages, responsive webpage, horizontal scrolling, no unplayable website.
Snippet length increase, Chrome Security Warning (2017)
1) Snippet length increase: Google doubled the character limit from 155 characters to 300 characters.
2) chrome security warning: Google started to display a warning to the user when they enter any data or input on the Http page.
Medic, Mobile Speed Update, Brackets (2018)
1) Medic: It affected health and wellness related websites only. Websites with low quality and fake content were punished in these updates
2) Mobile Speed Update: in the era of mobile Google started to give more preference to mobile-friendly web pages. pages with good loading time will rank better still if pages have slow loading time with good relevant content it may also rank better.
3) Brackets: It is implemented against manipulation in Google review and fake detail provided in webpages.
March 2019 Core Update, July core update
1) March 2019 core update: This update was made on quality content and relevancy. some niche was effected very broadly. Websites that provide information on YMCL search queries ( your money or your life).
2) July 2019 core Update: This is the first pre-announced core update by Google. It has affected news website broadly. Trustworthiness was the main factor behind this update.
